Why do some people prefer anal sex? Common reasons include curiosity and novelty; bodily sensations different from vaginal intercourse (it may stimulate the prostate for the receptive partner); and expectations shaped by pornography. Psychologically, the sense of taboo, power/control dynamics, and the desire to keep sex from feeling the same every time can add to the appeal. Many also enjoy the tightness and intense stimulation of anal sex, as well as the arousal triggered by a partner’s moans during the act.
In practice, however, early concerns and negative experiences are not uncommon: being too rough, or insufficient lubrication or warm-up can cause severe pain, tearing, or lingering discomfort. If a partner pressures or ignores a “no,” the experience shifts from intimacy to exploitation. Conversely, with mutual respect, clear communication, gradual preparation, and good technique, anal sex can be pleasurable for both.
Health and safety notes: The anus does not self-lubricate; use plenty of appropriate lubricant. Use condoms and maintain hygiene to avoid oral/vaginal–anal cross-contamination. Avoid when you have hemorrhoids or anal fissures. Stop and adjust immediately if you feel pain or discomfort at any time.
