An AV actor is a male performer who appears in adult video productions. In Japanese, the word danyū (男優) means “male actor” and can refer to performers in mainstream films and television. In an adult-entertainment context, however, it may refer specifically to a male adult performer.
While public attention often focuses on physical appearance, the job involves more than appearing on camera. Working with co-performers, following the production team’s direction and adapting to the pace of filming are also important parts of the role.
What Does an AV Actor Do on Set?
An adult video production involves more than its on-screen performers. Directors, camera operators, sound technicians and other crew members work together to create the finished film.
The male performer needs to remain aware of the director’s instructions, camera positioning and the movements of his co-performer. In productions centered on a female performer, his role often includes supporting her performance and helping the scene develop in line with the intended presentation.

The term eromen is also used in some of these female-oriented productions. It is not, however, a universal label for every male adult performer.
As a result, the same profession can involve different kinds of visibility: supporting another performer in one production, or being a central part of the attraction in another.

Building a lasting career involves more than appearance or name recognition. Experience on set, adaptability and the ability to work well with others are also important. Clear communication, consideration for co-performers and trust within the production team all contribute to a professional working environment.
Career paths also vary. Opportunities, earnings and the length of a performer’s career can differ considerably, so the success of a few well-known names should not be taken as representative of the entire industry.
An AV actor is both an on-screen performer and a member of a wider production team. Looking beyond the public image—and considering the work involved on set—provides a more realistic understanding of the profession.
